Transforming spelling education through innovative technology and engaging learning experiences
SpellingTree was born from a simple observation: learning to spell shouldn't be a chore. Growing up as an older sibling, I'd be tasked with helping my younger siblings with their spelling, drilling them on words for hours across weeks and frustrated with how much time it took. As a developer and someone who's passionate about education, I sought to find a better way to grapple with the difficulties of practicing spelling.
Our journey began in 2024 when I decided to found my school's first spelling team. In search for a platform to help my team practice, I found that there were no good options, all either being prohibitively expensive or simply unintuitive (many times both!). Remembering the struggles I had with my younger siblings, I decided to build my own platform for spelling practice not just for the team, but for a broader community of students and educators eager to improve their spelling skills and vocabulary.
Our mission is to make spelling practice not just effective, but fun. We do so by creating a platform that combines proven learning methods with modern technology to shape an app that can cater to the needs of students of all ages and abilities. We aim to do so by offering multiple different games for spelling and vocabulary practice, as well as the ability to create collections and discover lists publicly to step on the shoulders of giants.
We also believe that every student deserves access to high-quality educational tools that make learning enjoyable. This includes not only gamifying the spelling experience to help students build confidence in their literacy skills, but also ensuring that SpellingTree stays 100% free to use, free from ads, and open to collaboration. After all, as I learned from my experiences as a spelling captain, spelling improvement is best achieved through help and support from others.
